FD30

30-Minute
Fire Resistance

FD30 doors are required throughout most standard residential and commercial buildings under Approved Document B. They provide 30 minutes of fire integrity — slowing the spread of fire between compartments and providing critical escape time.

Typical Applications:

Apartment entrance doors
Internal flat doors in HMOs
Communal corridor access doors
Commercial office partitioning
FD60

60-Minute
Fire Resistance

FD60 doors are mandatory in higher-risk environments — stairwells serving more than 4 storeys, plant rooms, high-rise residential buildings, and locations where the fire strategy demands extended compartmentation. They provide twice the integrity of an FD30 door.

Typical Applications:

Protected stairwells (5+ storeys)
Plant rooms & service risers
High-rise residential blocks
Hospitals & care homes

Technical
FAQ

Fire door compliance is critical. For specification support on your project, call our technical team on +44 7397 672235.

FD30 and FD60 refer to the duration of fire resistance integrity the door provides — 30 minutes and 60 minutes respectively. Both ratings are tested under BS 476: Part 22 and EN 1634-1. FD30 is required in most standard residential and commercial applications under Approved Document B. FD60 is mandatory in higher-risk locations — stairwells over 4 storeys, plant rooms, hospitals, and high-rise blocks. Your fire strategy or building control officer will specify which rating is required for each opening.

Yes — all FBS fire door sets are supplied with factory-fitted intumescent seals and smoke strips as standard. FD30 sets include a single intumescent seal and a single-leg smoke strip. FD60 sets include a heavy-duty intumescent seal and a 3-seal smoke strip system. On veneer finished doors, seals are concealed within the door rebate to preserve the aesthetics. This is all part of the tested and certified assembly — you must not substitute or remove these components.

Yes — under UK building regulations, fire doors in most applications must be fitted with an approved self-closing device to ensure they return to the closed position when not in use. The closer must be from the approved hardware schedule for the specific door set. We stock a full range of CE-marked overhead closers and floor springs compatible with our fire door range — ask your account manager for the hardware catalogue.

Any aperture cut into a fire door must be within the scope of the original test evidence. A letter plate aperture on an FD30 entrance door is permissible if it falls within tested dimensions and is fitted with a certified intumescent letter plate. Cat flaps are not permitted as they break the integrity of the fire door assembly. We can advise on certified aperture options for your specific application.

Every FBS fire door set ships with a full documentation pack including: UKAS-accredited third-party test evidence (BS 476: Part 22 and/or EN 1634-1), CE Marking Declaration of Performance (EN 16034), approved hardware compatibility schedule, installation and maintenance guide, and an inspection record sheet. This pack is suitable for building control submission, O&M manuals, and Responsible Person file requirements under the Fire Safety Act 2021.

Yes. Bespoke sizing is available within the tested size range specified in our test evidence — your FBS account manager can advise on the maximum and minimum permitted dimensions for each product. Painted finishes in any RAL or BS colour are available on our white primed range with a 12–15 working day lead time. All bespoke sizes and finishes retain full certification, provided they fall within the scope of the original test evidence.
